Vienna in 1900 was one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, artistically, culturally and intellectually. Some 10% of the population were Jewish. Since the mid-1850's, when Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria had granted Jews full civil rights, the Jewish population in Vienna grew, reaching around 10% of the population, mostly located in the old Jewish quarter of Leopoldstadt.
